Decorating with florals can be difficult to do without looking too traditional or like your grandmother’s house. But florals are making a comeback in home decor and there are a number of new and fresh options that can modernize your living space while infusing color and pattern. Here are a few of my favorite places to include florals in your home, all for less than $60.

On the Wall
I love this Chevron Floral Print from Society 6.  At just $18 it’s a super fun way to mix a traditional floral with a trendy chevron and bring some color and dimension to your art collection.

On the Table
Nothing punches up a Summer luncheon like a bold table setting.  These Otomi Melamine Plates from Wisteria are a steal at $16 for a set of four.  I love the bright color combination and melamine means you can easily use them indoors or out.

For Your Feet
I love this floral pattern that Threshold by Target is using this season.  Personally, I have it on a pillow in my guest room but this little ottoman at only $59.99 is great with a chair or put a pair together in lieu of a coffee table.

On the Sofa
Keep it modern with one large scale floral with a geometric twist. This pillow by Jonathan Adler for JCP is$32 and his new line for JCP is making his designs accessible to everyone with beautiful colors and fun prints.

In the Kitchen
A touch of floral can be small and understated.  These hand-painted measuring spoons from Anthropologie are the perfect way to add a little interest to your kitchen drawer for less than $20.

Under Your Feet
An outdoor rug makes any patio or front porch more inviting and the Aster Area Rug from Home Decorators is no exception.  It starts at just $15 and with such wonderful color and pattern, could easily be used indoors as well.

As a child, I tried the raw stalks of the tart rhubarb plant on more than one occasion. Tart may be an understatement! It is easy to see why most of my favorite rhubarb recipes involve the addition of sugar. This perennial “pie plant” is actually a vegetable although most often treated as a fruit in desserts, sauces and jams.DSC_0468

We grow our own rhubarb, though it is also readily available in produce sections and farmers markets. You can easily dry, can or freeze the stalks to enjoy in the off-season but each spring I eagerly await the first, fresh picking and always have a stash of recipes waiting. So far, this year, I have baked a batch of rhubarb blueberry muffins (the mix of sweet and tart was very good), combined with strawberries for jam, made into an upside down cake and whipped up one of our favorite, nutty crisps.

The rhubarb season usually runs from May through June depending upon where you live. Grow your own or find some at the market, but give this tart treat a try!

Our favorite rhubarb crisp:

Rhubarb Filling

• 4 cups chopped fresh or frozen (thawed) rhubarb
• 1 cup sugar
• 2 tablespoons cornstarch
• 1 cup water
• 1 teaspoon vanilla.

Place rhubarb in an 8×8 pan or divide between 6 ramekins. Mix together sugar and cornstarch in a small saucepan, stir in water. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour over rhubarb.

Crisp topping

• ½ cup flour
• 12 cup rolled oats
• ½ cup brown sugar, packed
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• Pinch salt
• ½ cup chopped walnuts
• 5 tablespoons butter, melted

Mix together flour, oats, sugar, cinnamon, salt and walnuts. Stir in melted butter until evenly distributed. Crumble over filling. (I found, for us, that I use a little less than the entire batch of topping). Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes or until rhubarb is cooked through and filling is bubbly. We like to serve cooled, but warm, and top with a scoop of ice cream. The leftovers are easily warmed in the microwave for a fresh from the oven treat.

pretty black grosgrain ribbon detail at the waist.

The dress is marked down plus has an additional 40 percent off so it’s  a

Here is the link to this petite size if you are interested in purchasing it for yourself.

We paired it with some cute black heels from TJ Maxx. $39.99

Thank you, Nancy…my Daughter-in-love… for another fun fashion day :)

While I’m sharing deals at the Loft. I had to share this bracelet deal.

I bought this awhile back at the store when they had their 40% off sale

and noticed it online marked down even more. $9.95 from $29.50.

I snagged it with the 40 off deal in the store which was awesome,

but I’m thinking it’s about the same savings online once you tack on shipping.

It doesn’t go with the dress, but I wanted to share it cuz’ it’s such a great deal – e – o!!!

Loft bracelet

Here you can see it on my paper towel holder (turned jewelry rack) to get a size perspective. It’s a nice size.

HOSTGreenLogoWithTag_RGB
Most of us are looking for ways to keep our homes safe from harsh chemicals but also want a clean environment. When it comes to cleaning your carpets, HOST Dry Extraction Carpet Cleaner fits the bill perfectly! Host is an environmentally friendly carpet cleaning system that will reduce dust mites and mold while leaving your carpet fresh, clean, dry and ready to use. It is made from 100% plant-based resources and a little water making it a wonderfully green product.

The HOST product works much like a kitchen sponge to wash and absorb dirt from your carpet fibers. Using a limited amount of water, this system prevents liquid from running back down into your carpet backing where it is difficult to remove and can wick back up. The organic HOST sponges contain all the liquid needed to dissolve and absorb both water based and oil based dirt. And since little water is used, your carpet will be fresh, clean, dry and ready to use in no time!

natural carpet cleaningRoutinely cleaning your carpet helps reduce allergens and improve air quality. Just one cleaning with the Host system reduces dust mites by 78%, cat allergens by 85% as well as a dramatic reduction in mold and mold spores. The system was great for me because I deal with so many allergies. It worked well for Martha Stewart also: “I’ve used HOST Cleaner with great success and it’s good for all types of carpet. Plus I love that it’s environmentally friendly.”

If you would like to give HOST a try in your home you can find professional cleaners for HOST  or find a store who carries their products to do it yourself . There is also a kit available online. Please see hostdry.com for more tips and information.
