Pillow covers from Pottery Barn Fabric napkins

November 6, 2010

In my last post I shared this picture of the buffalo check red pillow I made…..

I was at Pottery Barn about a week ago and picked up an assortment of 20×20 inch cloth napkins for pillow projects.   You can save a lot just using their napkins to make your own pillow covers or any cloth napkin for that matter…. a lot of the same fabrics are used for their cloth napkins and their pillow covers. There is a much better selection of napkins in the store than online, plus online they only sell them in sets (If you don’t live near a Pottery Barn you can call one of them and they will just mail the item to you).  The buffalo check  pattern was on sale for $2.99 each…. I think the fringed edge is really cute!!.

Notice…The napkin has a white stitch all the way around the edge ……

I did this pillow really quick and decided to only use 2 napkins….I suggest 3 per pillow if you don’t want a gap like I ended up with.

First, I took one of the napkins and cut it in half….

Next, I just turned under the raw edges and sewed them with white thread. Then I used some white cotton ribbon and attached them so I could tie the back of the pillow shut….

I then sewed the pieces together….. I moved the stitch in about a quarter of an inch from the existing white edge stitch. Time to fill the pillow cover…. oops

It doesn’t close all the way…..

It actually doesn’t bother me that much….I’ll just add another tie or sew a piece of red ticking to either side of the opening . It kind of gives the pillow a bit of personality! Total cost just over 6 dollars + ribbon that was free because it was a tie from a throw I purchased.

added another tie…so it can be flipped either way.

These are adorable! I wish I had not returned my sewing machine that I got as a gift now – maybe I will find a used one just for these kind of projects. 🙂

I think it turned out so cute! Love he fringed edge. I think tablecloths, napkins and placemats are all good sources for pillow. You can find some cute patterns on clearance and you get a lot of fabric for the price.
