Whether it is a summer vacation destination or a weekend jaunt, visiting a public garden is an activity the entire family can enjoy. It is a wonderful, relaxing way to spend time outdoors, get some fresh air and view nature at its finest.
Here are a few free or low cost options:
• Garden Walk Buffalo: July 27th and 28th. See flower, vegetable, water, container and rock gardens as well as community gardens and houses dating back to the Civil War era. Admission is free, no tickets required.
• Sunset Gardens: In California visit the Sunset Magazine headquarters garden filled with trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials and grasses. Self guided tours are free, Mon-Fri 8-4.
• International Rose Test Garden, Portland, Oregon: Just minutes from downtown, features close to 7,000 rose bushes! Open daily; free.

• Portland Japanese Garden, Portland, Oregon: This garden is known as the most authentic Japanese garden outside Japan and boasts a generous 5.5 acres of tranquil beauty. Summer visitor hours May 1 – July 31st, Saturdays 9 am to 9 pm. This garden charges $9.50 for adults with lesser fees for seniors, students, and youth. 5 and under free.
