Maps in the decor – corner update

April 27, 2010

I picked up some old maps a few months ago at the antique store…I finely pulled them from the drawer and was inspired to use them. They are a great way to remind us to think and pray for our friends and family who are around the world. Initially, I was going to direct mount the maps to the wall, but soon realized after having them up for a short bit, that wouldn’t fly with the mold issues and allergies. I had a quick fix with the poster frames. I decided to attach the photos to corrugated cardboard and then adhere them to the front of the plexiglass. I’ll probably redo this with glass frames but for now this works well. I have 3 other large maps I’ll be adding to the collection.

PS…Does anyone know how to get musty, moldy smells out of old maps? I’d love to use them without framing them….

Here are a few photos of the progress.  Remember when this corner of the office was bare?? I “shopped the house” came up with some things I didn’t need elsewhere. Remember the garden stool snag from Big Lots for $20.00??? Anyway, I’m working my way around the house…just finished the living room, now I’m heading to the office….first stop…this corner 🙂

ps just in case you can recognize the people who are in the photos, don’t say their names in a comment….I haven’t told them they are on a blog shot yet. :)plus, for privacy…. not everyone likes their name out in blogland.

Below is the photo I took after shopping the house.. and adding my maps

 DONE..

Updating the house one corner at a time ….now on to the other areas of the office/study 🙂

You can put kitty litter in a box and lay the map on top. Depending on how bad the smell is, it will take 1-5 days. Remove map and give it the sniff test after 2 days.

Thank you Ruth, I’ve never heard of that process. I’ll see if I can borrow some kitty litter from a friend and give it a try.

Your corner looks comfy. As for the aroma…you might try putting your map in a container and burying it in baking soda. There are probably other ways that a restorer might be able to suggest but baking soda will absorb moisture and odor. You might also try good old fresh air…..so long as it’s a dry day and the maps aren’t exposed to direct sunlight.
