My interest in quilts started many years ago in my Grandma and Grandpa’s farmhouse attic. As a young girl I loved going upstairs into the amazing attic space that was filled with all kinds of old and interesting treasures. To get upstairs into the attic you had to walk up a narrow staircase that was hidden behind a smaller than usual sized door….that in itself made me curious. I was always told be careful and watch where I was walking because not every inch of the attic was covered with floorboards so you had to walk in certain areas that were safe. Once I was upstairs I enjoyed looking through all sorts of things from tiny old baby clothes, to old trunks and drawers filled with memorabilia from all sorts of occasions. There were many different antiques plus, huge and beautiful frames…LOVED… and bits and pieces of fabrics that were once used for quilting. I remember finding a bunch of little round circles that were hand sew by my Great Grandmother. I wasn’t sure what they were used for so I asked my mom and she explained that they were used for quilt making. I was fascinated as a young girl to learn that my Great Grandmother could take bits of fabric and form one large blanket….. it was AMAZING to me.
I have never taken up the craft of quilt making, but I have enjoyed purchasing a few over the years. My favorite is this vintage quilt I’m sharing in the pictures…it has pinks, browns, blues and a happy mustard yellow trim. I purchased it several years ago at an estate sale…. I simply love the colors and all the fine needle work patterns that are sewn into the ivory cloth pieces…. It has such a light and airy look.
My biggest suprise and delight with this particular quilt was when I found a date hand sewn into one of the corners…. 1854. Wow, what history this quilt must have! I can picture the hours and hours of needle work that went into forming its loveliness. I only wish I could have met the maker in person and thanked her!!! To think she would be old enough to be my Great, Great , Great Grandmother…
