Yes it is true, I hacked a cashmere sweater! Let me just say, this is a sweater I originally purchased at the thrift store for about 4.50 a few years ago. I attempted to felt it, but it doesn’t seem to felt the way 100% wool does, it does shrink however. Instead of having it sit in my closet, I decided to make something that I would use more often. I included a couple pics of me just to prove that these items are actually wearable.
The outcome: 1 pullover scarf roll, 1 pair of fingerless mitts, and one pullover tie scarf
The Process:
1 thrift store cashmere sweater $4.50
Use your cutting wheel and a long ruler …. slice off the lower portion of the sweater just below the arm pits.
The lower portion of this sweater is the slip over neck scarf. This really could be a NO sew process, but the sweater I am using is a size large and the body is a little bigger than I want for a pullover scarf. So I decided to sew it up a little on the side so it fit more to my liking 🙂 A small or med in this same sweater would have probably worked perfect. I don’t know if you can tell in the picture, but I sewed a seam in approx. 2 inches on the right side and stitched it the length of the piece. Next I trimmed the excess and I was done!! Super easy to just slip over the head, and oh so soft!! Refer to the picture below for the finished example.
Next we’ll talk about the tie scarf:
The lower arm pieces are used for the fingerless mittens. I shared a demo here. After the mitts were made I took the top portion of the sweater and pulled it over my head and tied the arms!! EASY NO sew and not a bit of waste!! So there are 3 different examples of what can be done with an entire Cashmere sweater for very little cost!! HOOT!!

You are so creative!! When you work with stretchy sweater fabrics like this project and the pillow from your last post, do you have a particular thread or machine setting you prefer?

Marla, you are so sweet! Last Christmas my husband got me a basic Singer/Confidence sewing machine. I never change the basic setting unless I’m zigzaging the edges, and that is just a flip of the switch. Also, I never really pull the fabric when I’m sewing the sweater material, I just guide it. As far as the thread, I just grab any basic thread I have in my sewing box that matches. Just start with a sweater you don’t really care about, it will give you a feel for how easy it is to work with, and how your machine responds 🙂 xo

Such a great idea! And it looks so cozy….I could’ve used this when I got out this morning and it was 22 degrees F.
Thanks so much for your sweet comment on my PB Inspired Numbers Canvas.
