I am so happy to welcome our next guest blogger Brooke!!!
… Her project is so cute …. I knew you would love it as much as I do!!
Hi, I’m Brooke from Inside-Out Design and I’m so excited to be guest posting for Rene’ today! My blog is about my passion for home design and how I work to turn my house into the home of my dreams without wrecking my budget. The only thing I love more than decorating is saving money while I do it, which is why I love finding blogs like Bargain Hoot to give me great ideas!
One of the best ways that I have come up with for saving when I decorate is to copy décor items that I see in stores. If I see an easy-to-duplicate inspiration piece while out shopping, instead of dropping any money on it, I snap a picture with my phone, then go home and make it myself.
So far my all-time favorite copy job has been of this book page tree art that I saw in West Elm:
I took this picture with my cell phone, then a few days later gathered the supplies to make my own:
- paint
- canvas
- Mod Podge & brush to apply it
- scissors
- pencil
- old book to rip pages from
First, I painted my canvas grey.
Next, using the picture on my phone as a guide, I drew the outline of a tree with a pencil, making it match as closely as possible the shape of the tree in West Elm’s picture.
Then, I ripped pages from the book and cut them into pieces to fit inside the pencil lines.
For the outside edges of the tree, I cut the paper into rounded shapes to match the shape of the tree, but to fill in the center I just used rectangular pieces. In order to keep the overall look from being too “planned” I varied the direction of the text- some running right, some diagonal, some upside-down, and I made sure to make all the pieces different sizes.
I glued each piece down as I cut it, using the Mod Podge, and then went back over the whole canvas with the Mod Podge once I was finished with the tree.
Here is my finished art:
Thanks West Elm, for always providing me with tons of inspiration, and thanks Rene’ for letting me share some of it today!

I LOVE this!! I actually like Brooke’s copied art better than the original West Elm picture – Brooke’s tree looks fuller! This makes me think of all kinds of cute pictures I could make with a colored canvas and pages from books. Thank you!
