Last week I was in the bookstore and ended up spending most of my time in the
cookbook section. Several cookbooks caught my eye, but I ended up purchasing
one of Jamie Oliver’s Cookbooks. Jamie’s Food Revolution. I’ve heard
of the whole food revolution, but never took the plunge to fully explore what it was
all about.
What’s behind it all started years ago during the Second World War when
the British government
created the “Ministry of Food” and hired knowledgeable individuals to go across
the land and teach people how to feed themselves well with the little food rations they had.
They educated the people about food and proper nutrition so they’d be healthy and fighting fit.
Americans were on board too and were encouraged to plant victory gardens.
Fast forward to today and Jamie realized there is a new war going on. The battle for good
health and eating habits. With the encouragement of a friend he began the Pass It On movement.
Basically, it is a pledge to learn at least one recipe from each chapter of this book
and pass on the knowledge on how to cook those recipes to at least 2-4 friends.
Jamie wants to encourage people to take the pledge regardless if you are a complete
beginner or a good
cook who likes simplicity. He wants this to be the catalyst for empowering
millions to make proper
home-cooked, affordable meals from scratch again.
To do that you’ll need some simple
kitchen equipment, practice
and a cupboard full of some good basic ingredients.
It’s the basic ingredients along with herbs and spices
that take a simple piece of cod, chicken or beef and make it taste like it’s from
Spain, Italy, Morocco or China.
I’ll be sharing a recipe from each chapter over the next few months
along with the basic spices you’ll need to make it happen.
Are you interested in taking the Pledge?
Grab his book and Pass It On.

Thank you for such a good book review. I’ve never seen his shows and I don’t find his cookbook covers very, um, enticing at all so I would have never looked at this cookbook on my own, but now you have me interested. I’m looking forward to what you have to share and I’ll be planning to take a look at the book next time I go to the bookstore (which is now farther away since my beloved Borders where I’ve hung out every Wednesday night for the past 15 years is closing!).

I LOVE his show about changing food in schools, although I will say he touches the food & licks his fingers too much when he cooks which kinda freaks me out. LOL I had no idea the origins of the “Ministry of Food” (which sounds a lot like Harry Potter Ministry of Magic Hah!) – I love learning random factoids like that – thanks Renee! 🙂

Dancy…I’m with you on the licking figers and touching food thing:)
Michelle looking forward to it… except I might have to cook a few things outside on the outdoor burner… don’t want the house to smell weird when using some of the spices.
Diana, So sad about the Borders!!
