My head is always full of design ideas and projects for my home, but with two little ones running around it can be hard to find the time to actually get them done. That is why I love a simple paint project. Something as inexpensive as a can of spray paint can breath new life into a piece of old furniture or an accessory in a matter of minutes. Here are a few of my tips for successful DIY spray paint projects.
Go Glossy
I love a nice thick glossy finish when I use spray paint and my brand of choice is Rust-Oleum. They have a beautiful variety of colors and a helpful website that provides tips and estimates for how many cans of paint typical projects take.
Don’t Skip the Sanding
Don’t skip the sanding when prepping your piece to paint. A light sanding will give your paint a surface to stick to and help avoid drips. I had this old side table from TJMaxx in my basement when I went to design my daughters room. I lightly sanded it and sprayed it with one coat of paint and in about 20 minutes I had what looked like a brand new table.
Maximize Your Metals
Don’t overlook metal surfaces when spray painting. You might worry that the shiny surface won’t grab the paint but some of my most successful paint projects have involved metals that otherwise would have gone out of style. I found these green metal candlesticks in my mom’s give-away pile.
Two coats of red spray paint and I turned them into the perfect Valentine’s Day mantel decor.
Take a Color Risk
The beauty of a project as inexpensive as a can of paint is that it allows you to take a color risk. I had this mirror which was originally a dark brown. I played it safe and sprayed it a glossy white.
But it did nothing for the room. It looked too boring and bland. So for $5 I purchased a new can of paint in a much more bold and exciting color. The results were a completely different impact on the room, creating a bright and cheery entryway accent!
So if you have five minutes, you have time for a fun paint update. Good luck and happy spraying!
