Do you need a quick cake for an event, but the typical grocery store-decorated cakes aren’t what you have in mind? Here’s an idea. Pick up one of those cakes from your grocery store bakery and repurpose the frosting. Try to find a cake that matches the colors you want, or maybe you need plain white. I’m making a simple pink polka dot design, so I picked a cake with pink roses.
If you are at the store when the bakery is open, ask if you can buy extra white frosting. I didn’t have extra when making this cake, but having a bit more White icing would have made it easier especially if I needed an all white cake for a wedding for example but it’s not completely necessary. Gently remove the pink flowers and border From the cake. I used a butter knife to do this.
You can place them in a zip-lock bag and use it as a pastry bag by cutting the tip off the end.
Next, remove the green leaves using the same technique. After removing the unwanted colored icing, I took the extra white icing that made up the top border and scrolls on the sides and placed it in a bowl. I thinned it down with some water.
You may need to just add a little water at a time to make sure the icing is smooth but not runny. After that, I smoothed out the remaining white icing on the top and sides to make a crumb coat of icing on the cake. I then placed the cake in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes. With the extra thinned out white icing, I re-iced the cake to make it completely white and smooth on the top and sides. Next I used the ziploc pastry bag to place pink polka dots on the cake. Any remaining pink icing can beplaced in the freezer and saved for another pastry use.
And there you have it! A simple polka dot style that fit my needs better than the more ornate rose design. I’m looking back in the archives and finding posts I never published
